What we collect, and what we deliberately don't

Short version: an email address if you ask for reminders, a first name or nickname for the person whose birthday it is, and the day and month of that birthday. Not the year. Nothing else.

Why there's no year field. We only need the day and month to work out a star sign and to send a reminder. The birthday we're storing usually belongs to someone who has never visited this site and can't agree to anything, so we collect the least we can get away with and no more. There is nowhere on this site to enter a year, a surname or an address.

What we collect

What we never collect

About the other person's data

When you save a birthday, you're giving us information about somebody else. We take that seriously: we keep it to a nickname and a day and month, we never contact them, we never sell or share it, and we delete it the moment you ask. If you'd rather not hand over someone else's details at all, the guides work perfectly well without signing up for anything.

Why we're allowed to hold it

We rely on your consent, given when you sign up for reminders. You can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email, or by contacting us — that deletes the reminder and everything attached to it.

How long we keep it

For as long as you want reminders. If you unsubscribe, we delete the reminder data. If an account goes three years without being opened, we delete it and let you know first.

Who else sees it

Our hosting and database provider, so the website and reminders can run. Our email provider, so we can send reminder emails. Our DNS and email-routing provider, so the domain and replies work. Nobody else. We don't sell data and we don't run advertising.

Affiliate links and other websites

GiftBrief doesn’t use affiliate links at the moment, so no affiliate network sets cookies or tracks purchases because of us. If that changes, we’ll update this policy and our affiliate disclosure before any affiliate link goes live, and label those links clearly where they appear (for example “Ad” or “paid link”). An affiliate network might then set its own cookie when you click one of those links, under its own privacy policy. We wouldn’t receive your name, address or payment details.

Some gift pages have buttons that open an ordinary search on a retailer’s own website. When you leave GiftBrief, that site’s own privacy and cookie policies apply.

GiftBrief doesn’t set analytics cookies. We keep simple daily counters for page views and for clicks on outgoing retailer links, so we can see which guides and gift categories are useful. These are aggregate totals, not user profiles: GiftBrief itself doesn’t store your IP address or any other details about individual visitors. Like most websites, our hosting and network providers (Railway and Cloudflare) may keep their own technical access logs, which can include IP addresses, under their own privacy policies.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask us for a copy of what we hold, ask us to correct or delete it, or object to how we use it. Email us and we'll deal with it within one month. If you're unhappy with how we respond, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, we'll say so by email before it takes effect.
